Over the weekend, I was informed that local photographer was using a lot of the same wording on this blog on their blog, some of it word-for-word. Even the “About Me” section closely matched mine. As photographers and business people, it’s a very wise choice to come up with your own wording on your website, on your marketing materials, and anything else that you use to promote your business. YOU SHOULD BE REPRESENTING YOUR BUSINESS, NOT SOMEONE ELSE’S BUSINESS. It is disrespectful, and it shows your lack of integrity when you copy someone’s wording, thoughts, ideas, and images to represent as your own. I’ve put a lot of time in what I put out there to represent my business; having someone just swipe it and use as their own is beyond anything to help your business grow, especially when potential clients view it and recognize that you’ve copied another photographer’s wording. Below is a screenshot of my website with wording that lets the viewers know that copying things from this website is in violation of Federal Copyright Law. You cannot “Right-click…Save” on anything from my website, nor can you save any images. For anyone who is in business, please be mindful of what you use to represent your business – anything less than your own wording, thoughts, ideas is not acceptable. stephanie greenwell photography federal copyright law prosecution
